Phil Solem Credits

Great Buildings - Apart From The Crowd (1981)

It was 1979 and Phil's band had just split up. Within moments of the break-up, he got a call inviting him to join this new band, with former Quick members Danny Wilde and Ian Ainsworth, and drummer Richard Sanford.  Apart From The Crowd's first single was the anthem "Hold On To Something", which was co-written by Phil. Great Buildings still has a cult following to this day, and the partnership of Solem and Wilde would go on to span parts of four decades!

Danny Wilde - The Boyfriend (1986)

After the demise of Great Buildings, Danny Wilde recorded his first solo album 'The Boyfriend' with Phil Solem on lead guitar and background vocals. The result was the minor rock radio hit "Isn't It Enough." True fans will make no mention of the video for "Isn't It Enough", particularly the hair styles on display...

The Rembrandts (1990)
Phil and Danny recorded this album in Danny's garage, where Phil was actually sleeping during his visits to LA. Before the advent of Pro Tools, it was quite rare for a demo to be released "as is," but that's exactly what happened with 'The Rembrandts.' "Just The Way It Is, Baby" was a top 20 hit in almost every industrialized country in the world. The album was a favorite among critics and hit # 88 on the Billboard charts.  The follow up single 'Someone', a fan favorite, also crept into the Hot 100 singles chart. Other strong tracks like Show Me Your Love, Burning Timber and Follow You Down helped to make this album a classic from start to finish.

The Rembrandts - Untitled (1992)
The follow up to The Rembrandts debut was another critic and fan favorite, 1992's "Untitled." Although the album's first single, 'Johnny Have You Seen Her', was a top 40 hit, the album didn't make much noise, sales-wise. The classic song 'Rollin' Down The Hill' was featured in the hit comedy Dumb & Dumber. The album's closing track, 'In The Back Of Your Mind,' still remians as one of Phil's favorite Rembrandts songs.

The Rembrandts - L.P. (1995)
I'll Be There For You, the theme from Friends and mega hit from The Rembrandts' third album, propelled the duo to a new stratosphere in terms of airplay and album sales. Unfortunately, the track overshadowed an album that featured some of The Rembrandts most diverse music. Great rock songs like 'April 29' and 'Lovin' Me Insane' still featured the signature Rembrandts harmonies, but with more of an edge than ever before.  'The Other Side of Night' was a poignant and meaningful closing track to an album of great alternative/power-pop.

Dez Dickerson - Oneman (1997)

The former lead guitarist for Prince set out to record his first solo album, and he recruited his old pal Phil from Minneapolis to sing and play lead guitar on the first single, Hello Again.  A great album from start to finish. Also listen to EastCoast/WestCoast for Phil on lead guitar.

Thrush (2000)

A killer rock/alternative/punk/powerpop trio featuring Phil Solem, John Fields and Michael Bland. Read all about 'em and listen to their songs on this site!

The Rembrandts - Lost Together (2001/2003)
The first Rembrandts album in over 5 years is probably their strongest album to date.  Cuts like Lost Together, St. Paul, Long Way To Go and Big Plans showcase the diversity and songwriting of the duo at their best.  The outer-spacey 'One Of Us' and the piratey 'Happiness' help to make this song for song, the best Rembrandts album. Check out the 2003 international version of Lost Together, with an even better version of Too Late and an extra song!
